Harris & Lewis Outer Hebrides Landscape Photography Workshop
3rd - 9th November 2019
5 Days & 6 Nights Bed & Breakfast & Packed Lunches
Complimentary Ferry Crossing & All Transport whilst on the Island
If you’re looking for Photographic Inspiration, look no further than the Isles of Harris and Lewis.
I am offering the opportunity to join me on a journey which will take you to some of the most beautiful landscapes in the British Isles.
These Western Isles offer an amazing diversity of scenery and creative licence for the photographer. Ranging from the white sandy beaches, turquoise seas, rugged cliffs and sea stacks to the windswept plateaus and the spectacular scenery along the Golden Road.
We will be based in the comfortable Harris Hotel in Tarbert with easy access to the wonderful beaches of Harris which includes the Jewel in the Crown, Luskentyre. Harris has remarkable coastal treasures from the vast golden sands of Luskentyre and Seilebost that will leave you feeling dwarfed to the immaculate miniature beaches of South Harris, such as the one at Bagh Steinigidh. There are so many beaches and all of them have their own characters, each offering something different. There is a raw but natural beauty to this part of the world that gets through to you in a very different way. You’ll be opening your eyes to the most extraordinary remote corner of the British Isles.
Based in our lovely hotel also gives us easy access to the Golden Road which snakes it’s way around fjord-like inlets and where we’ll find many abandoned crofts amongst the lunar landscape, some locations of which were used in the film Space Odyssey 2001.
The workshop is designed to provide a balance of visiting a variety of locations which will include seeing the wonderful cliffs and sea stacks along the west coast of Lewis. We will see the impressive Callanish Stones, the amazing stone circles which will challenge your compositional skills as well as the abandoned crofts, moorland, lochans that are dotted around Lewis. While on Lewis we will visit the Butt of Lewis Lighthouse. “The Butt” is characterised by pounding seas and rugged cliffs that extend southeast to North Tolsta where they suddenly give way to two of the islands most beautiful beaches. The Garry Sands with their enigmatic rock stacks rising from the sand and the Traigh Mhor one of the longest on Lewis.
We will also visit the Gearrannan Blackhouse village, located in a gorgeous bay looking over the ocean and coastal landscapes. From the blackhouses you can wander up the hill and capture an image over the thatched roofs and chimneys. These experiences all offer a peek at what island life used to look like.
Expect to experience fast moving weather systems, which at times can be challenging and a real test of your technical abilities. The light will change throughout the day and you will learn to get the best out of it - this will help you not only be more productive, it can also foster creativity and make it easier to be more flexible when unexpected conditions happen in the future.
During the evenings, we will enjoy looking back over your images shot on location in the digital darkroom. Here, we will look at the techniques used in Lightroom and Photoshop to process your images ready for display. I will be there to help and support you through the post production process and I will be happy to show you processing techniques such as exposure blending, using layers and masks. These evening sessions will be a balance between the days shoot and the post processing. I always encourage a positive group discussion so that you will all leave the week having gathered a wealth of knowledge and new skills.
These workshops are very relaxed which I hope will leave you feeling fulfilled and rewarded.
The Outer Hebrides is a magical place and a place which offers the photographer so much creative opportunities. And once visited, these Western Isles will stay with you for the rest of your life. They are dominated by the force of the weather and resemble very little to be found on the mainland. As a part of the “British” experience they are quite unique, and are much further from London and the centres of political power than can be measured in miles.
I am only running with a small number of places on this particular occasion which will allow everyone space to photograph and provide me much more time with each participant..
